Simulated Moving Bed Form Effects on Real-Time In-Stream Sediment Concentration Measurement with Densitometry

چکیده
This study evaluated fluctuations in the output signal of a densimeter, an in situ suspended-sediment measurement device based on a very sensitive differential pressure transducer. Although the densimeter produced accurate less than 10% error results in the laboratory for concentrations of 10–1,000 mg/L, there was a much larger fluctuation in the field test output signal. These fluctuations were hypothesized to have originated from fluctuations imparted by movement of bed material on the channel bottom. Measuring root mean square and mean velocities and corresponding pressure differences at locations in front of and behind a bluff body simulated movement of a body/bed form past a sampling point in a quasistatic manner. Position of the bluff body relative to the sample port resulted in differential pressure swings equivalent to 65,000 mg/L sediment concentration. Turbulent structure changed dramatically with position of the bluff body. Thus, pressure densitometry using a differential pressure transducer is likely not a reliable system for measuring sediment concentration under in-stream conditions, particularly near the channel bottom where bed forms and large objects may pass between the

Simulation of Separation of a Racemic Mixture of Ibuprofen by Supercritical Fluid Chromatography in Simulated Moving Bed
Separation of a racemic mixture of ibuprofen at a low concentration level by supercritical fluid chromatography in a simulated moving bed (SFC-SMB) is investigated by simulation. The feasibility of ibuprofen enantiomers separation has been experimentally examined in the literature. Our simulation results show that separation of ibuprofen enantiomers is feasible by this method, and R-ibuprofen a...
متن کاملUncertainty Estimation in Stream Bed Sediment Fingerprinting Based on Mixing Model
Uncertainty associated with mixing models is often substantial, but has not yet been fully incorporated in models. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a Bayesian-mixing model that estimates probability distributions of source contributions to a mixture associated with multiple sources for assessing the uncertainty estimation in sediment fingerprinting in Zidasht catchment, Iran....
متن کاملStochastic modeling in sediment dynamics: Exner equation for planar bed incipient bed load transport conditions
[1] Even under flow equilibrium conditions, river bed topography continuously evolves with time, producing trains of irregular bed forms. The idea has recently emerged that the variability in the bed form geometry results from some randomness in sediment flux. In this paper, we address this issue by using the Exner equation and a population exchange model derived in an earlier paper. In this mo...
متن کاملThree-dimensional spatial variations of suspended sediment concentration over vortex ripples
A three-dimensional mixture theory model (SedMix3D) was used to simulate the flow and sediment transport over vortex ripples for scaled laboratory conditions. SedMix3D treats the fluid-sediment mixture as a continuum of varying density and viscosity with the concentration of sediment and velocity of the mixture calculated using a sediment flux equation coupled to the Navier-Stokes equations for...
متن کاملFirst-order contaminant removal in the hyporheic zone of streams: physical insights from a simple analytical model.
A simple analytical model is presented for the removal of stream-borne contaminants by hyporheic exchange across duned or rippled streambeds. The model assumes a steady-state balance between contaminant supply from the stream and first-order reaction in the sediment. Hyporheic exchange occurs by bed form pumping, in which water and contaminants flow into bed forms in high-pressure regions (down...
